Saturday, Time Trial day
Hi, Fleur here for the final day in Germany before heading to Chamonix in the French Alps for the week to visit more friends. Today is going to break up the classification up as it has become a lottery going into this Time Trial. The Time Trial is that moment of truth where they are out there on their own digging deep with only their strength of mind and body to aid in beating that clock. We don´t have a time trial in the Tour Down Under so it was good to be track side again.
The Bayern Rundfahrt Organisation, is made up of great people from all over Bavaria who donate their time to the week to bring this race to the Pros, and for the time trial they rallied the township community of Berching to make today happen. The generous people of Berching gave up their own personal cars for the teams who did not have sufficient cars, they opened their school and provided great baking to our press center here, and offered dozens of motor bike riders help marshall the course. These volunteers and the way the towns embrace the Tour of Bavaria is what adds to the festive feel, warmth and welcoming atmosphere. And with all great stage races there is an opportunity for amateur and hobby riders to ride the same course as the Pros. Hundreds of amateur riders came to participate in their own time trial against the clock this morning, along with para-olympians, which was great to see.
I joined Team Vacansoleil following some of their riders as they navigated the time trial course along the canal then over two steady climbs through rolling lush paddocks. The highlight for me is always racing down the hill. What I admire so much about these riders is their courage and absolute lack of fear as they descend at nearly 100km an hour. Around some of the corners I just had to close my eyes. My driver was laughing. But seriously, how they manage to stay upright on two slim-line wheels at those speeds never ceases to amaze me. To me, cyclists are such talented athletes. And I believe cycling is the best, and possibly toughest, sport in the world.
So, signing off here in the press center after another day of eating way too much cake. It has been an absolute pleasure seeing Bavaria with Tilman, Jo, Dagmar and friends of the Organisation and I wish you all a safe and exciting final day of racing.
Until next year, Ciao.
Fleur,
from Down Under.
